A middleweight fight featuring former UFC light heavyweight champions Vitor Belfort and Lyoto Machida took place on the main card of tonight’s UFC 224 pay-per-view event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The bout is expected to serve as Belfort’s retirement fight.
Round one begins and both fighters seem tentative early. Both men are staying at distance looking to counter one another. Belfort charges forward with a flurry. Machida avoids and then lands a kick to the body. He circles along the fence and then stops and fires off a low kick. Another low kick from Machida. Belfort is looking to find a way inside. The fans are growing restless now. Machida with another hard outside low kick. Belfort charges in with a flurry that finishes in a right hand on the chin of Machida. Lyoto is able to shrug off the strike and circle out. “The Dragon” lands another low kick. He goes to the body of Belfort with a front kick. Vitor takes the center of the octagon. He catches a Machida kick and lands a left hand. Round one comes to an end.
Round two begins and Vitor fires off an early combination. Nothing appeared to land flush and Lyoto answers promptly with a kick. Machida with a stiff jab up the middle. He switches angles and Belfort looks confused. Lyoto with a left front kick and Belfort is floored. This one is all over. What a finish from “The Dragon”!
