Homeless Man Offers Thanks to Joanne Calderwood

Last weekend, in the opening bout of UFC 203‘s main card, Scottish strawweight Joanne Calderwood was submitted by dangerous Brazilian Jessica Andrade. Despite the loss, however, the Scotswoman’s visit to Cleveland was not entirely negative.

A few days prior to the fight, Calderwood and her training partner UFC flyweight Zach Makovsky were walking down the street when they met a homeless man who told them a few jokes. As a thank you, Calderwood then gave the man a ticket to UFC 203 so that he could watch her fight.

Regrettably, Calderwood could not deliver a winning performance, but she received a thank you note from the man all the same. Calderwood shared the letter, which mistakenly addresses her as “Jovon” rather than Joanne, on her Instagram.

This just made my morning, leaving Cleveland with a loss but a smile. I met a homeless man during the week and he walked zach and I down the street a little telling a couple of jokes. He was interested in what was going on and I told him I'd leave a ticket for him to attend the UFC last night. I wasn't sure if he'd go but when I went to check out he left this lovely note. 💗💗💗 #begrateful #behappy #helponeanother #ufc203 #ufccleveland #aprreciatethesmallthings P.s I didn't have the heart to correct him and I kinda like the name jovon (sounds like Joanne)

The letter reads as followed (via Fox Sports):

Dearest Jovon [Joanne],

Although you lost the fight you will always be a winner in life!

You are a rare and unique person. Kind, sweet and nonjudgemental. I wish you well in all that you do. I will never forget you!

Yours truly,

Calderwood is not the only fighter to make headlines with her kindness lately. Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Miesha Tate recently received similar praise when she carried an injured child down a mountain.

Are you impressed by “Jovon” Calderwood’s actions? Sound off, PENN nation!
