The octagon will return to Rio de Janeiro this evening for UFC 237, a twelve-bout fight card headlined by a strawweight title fight between Rose Namajunas and Jessica Andrade.
The UFC reigning 115-pound champion, Namajunas (8-3 MMA), will return to the cage for the first time since UFC 223 at tonight’s event in Brazil. ‘Thug’ is coming off back to back victories over former strawweight queen Joanna Jędrzejczyk in her most recent octagon appearances.
Meanwhile, Jessica Andrade (19-6 MMA) will enter tonight’s main event on a three fight win streak, her latest being a devastating knockout win over former division title challenger Karolina Kowalkiewicz.
UFC 237 will be co-headlined by a middleweight bout featuring former division kingpin Anderson Silva taking on Jared Cannonier.
Silva (34-9 MMA) will be making a quick turnaround, this after dropping a decision loss to Israel Adesanya at February’s UFC 234 event in Australia. Prior to the setback, ‘The Spider’ was coming off a unanimous decision victory over Derek Brunson which occurred at UFC 208.
As for ‘The Killa Gorilla’, Cannonier was last seen in action at November’s UFC 230 event in New York, where he defeated former World Series of Fighting Champion David Branch.
UFC 237 also features a key featherweight bout between former division champion Jose Aldo and surging contender Alexander Volkanovski.
Aldo has returned to form in recent months, scoring stoppage victories over perennial division contenders Jeremy Stephens and Renato Moicano in his most recent octagon appearances.
Meanwhile, Volkanovski was last seen in action at December’s UFC 232 event, where he picked up a TKO victory over former title challenger Chad Mendes.
If that wasn’t enough to get you interested, UFC 237 also features a lightweight scrap between former two-division UFC champion BJ Penn and fan favorite Clay Guida.
