It looks like UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway will return to defend his featherweight title at UFC 222, which takes place in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 3.
According to a report by MMA Junkie’s Simon Samano, Holloway is set to take on former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar. MMA Junkie reported that a “person with knowledge of the situation” asked to remain anonymous with the UFC having yet to announce the fight.
Holloway and Edgar were originally scheduled to fight for Holloway’s title at UFC 218 in December. However, an injury forced Edgar to pull out from the bout. Holloway was then booked against former champion Jose Aldo in an immediate rematch where he won by TKO in the third round in similar fashion to when they first met at UFC 212 in June. Edgar last fought against rising star Yair Rodriguez at UFC 211 in May, winning by TKO in the second round and serving Rodriguez his first UFC loss.
The Hawaiian champion will look to defend his UFC title for the second time and improve on his 19-3 professional mixed martial arts record. “Blessed” is on a 12 fight-winning streak and will look to further establish himself in the record books.
Edgar, on the other hand, will have another chance to make history in the featherweight title fight if he can get his hand raised. With a UFC featherweight title win, “The Answer” would be one of the few to win two UFC titles in different weight classes and join the likes of Randy Couture, BJ Penn, Conor McGregor and most recently Georges St-Pierre.
