Report: Cowboy Rebooked for Scrap with Matt Brown at UFC 206

Donald Cerrone

As unfortunate as they are, UFC 205‘s last-minute losses are UFC 206’s gain.

First the Toronto card received a Tim Kennedy vs. Rashad Evans bout that was originally scheduled for UFC 205’s undercard. Now, it looks as though the Toronto card will grow by one epic welterweight scrap as Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone is rumored to be taking on Matt Brown at the event. Cowboy, of course, was expected to take on Kelvin Gastelum in the second bout of UFC 205’s main card. When Gastelum was unable to make weight for the bout, however, Cowboy was left without an opponent and forced off the UFC 205 bill.

News of Cowboy’s move to the UFC 206 bill was first reported by Damon Martin of FOX Sports.

Should this bout materialize as reported, it’ll join several other high profile scraps on the UFC 206 lineup, such as a light heavyweight title fight between champ Daniel Cormier and challenger Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, a featherweight bout between Max Holloway and Anthony Pettis, a featherweight bout between Cub Swanson and Doo Ho Choi, and of course, the recently rescheduled Evans vs. Kennedy middleweight bout.

Cowboy will enter this rumored showdown having gone 3-0 since moving from lightweight to welterweight earlier this year. In this new division he has scored stoppage wins over Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira, Patrick Cote, and Rick Story.

Brown, meanwhile, will enter the bout having suffered losses to Demian Maia and Jake Ellenberger in his last two fights. He is currently scheduled for a fight with Tarec Saffiedine at UFC 207, though this fight will of course be scrapped if he’s indeed fighting Cerrone at UFC 206.
