Donald Cerrone wants one more lightweight title run, targets an old rival

Donald Cerrone

Last night, in the main event of the UFC’s anticipated return to Austin, Texas, Donald Cerrone rebounded from a three-fight losing streak with a destructive, first-round stoppage of Yancy Medeiros. While this impressive win served to keep Cerrone ranked at welterweight, he admitted post-fight that he plans to return to his former haunts in the lightweight division, where he hopes to make one last run at the title.

In particular, Cerrone seems hellbent on a fight with Dagestan’s Khabib Nurmagomedov, who will battle Tony Ferguson for the title at UFC 223 this April 7. Cerrone and Nurmagomedov, to remind, have plenty of history together, having been booked to fight twice in the past to no avail.

“I want 155, I want that belt,” Cerrone said post-fight. “[Khabib], I’m coming. I ain’t scared to fight…”

Donald Cerrone has not fought in the stacked UFC lightweight division December of 2015, when he mauled by former champion Rafael dos Anjos in the first-round of a lightweight title fight.

Cerrone’s destruction of the game Yancy Medeiros marked his 20th victory in the Octagon, which ties him with fellow greats Michael Bisping and Georges St-Pierre for the most UFC wins of all time. This is a feat Cerrone has been trying to achieve for his last four fights. Regrettably for the notorious finisher and his fans, he was knocked out by Jorge Masvidal, decisioned by Robbie Lawler, and knocked out by Darren Till in his last three fights.

Do you think a return to the lightweight division is the right move for Donald Cerrone? Make your opinions heard in the comments section.
