It seemed like UFC 196 was lacking some magic with one of the most historic fights about to take place with UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor looking to make history and become the first simultaneous two-weight UFC champion by taking on lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos.
When news broke that dos Anjos pulled out of the fight with McGregor less than two weeks from their scheduled fight date of March 5th, it seemed like the excitement for UFC 196 really started to snowball. The various fighters that were in the hat to fight McGregor on short notice had both fans and fighters excitedly awaiting who would be announced as the official replacement.
Ultimately Nate Diaz was awarded the money fight with Conor McGregor. Diaz’s boxing coach Richard Perez says that Conor McGregor fans are in for a rude awakening. Perez spoke with Submission Radio about the upcoming bout.
“When it comes to the night of the fight, McGregor’s going to be shocked,” Perez said (transcribed by Bloody Elbow). “McGregor is a good striker. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying he’s not, but Nathan’s better. I mean, when Nathan’s on his game plan he’ll make him look silly.”
