Dana White: Conor McGregor is done at welterweight

Conor McGregor

After Conor McGregor won the UFC featherweight championship by defeating Jose Aldo back in the main event of UFC 194, it didn’t take long for the newly crowned featherweight champ to sign the contract for his next fight.

The fight was slated to be a lightweight title fight against Rafael dos Anjos in the main event of UFC 196 on March 5th. Unfortunately, dos Anjos was forced out of the fight with a broken foot just two weeks before the fight. Ultimately the UFC selected Nate Diaz as a fill-in opponent for McGregor, and moved the fight to 170 pounds.

Diaz defeated McGregor in the pair’s first meeting at UFC 196, however it was McGregor who left Las Vegas with the win at UFC 202 when the pair had their rematch.

With McGregor’s stock once again at an all-time high, there are quite a few different options for the featherweight champ.

Returning to welterweight isn’t one of them according to UFC President Dana White, who spoke during an interview, as transcribed by MMAWeekly:

“I made that fight twice. That’s it. It’s time to move on because (McGregor) has the 145-pound title.”

“At the end of the day, he’s a 145-pound fighter. He could go to (lightweight), but going back up to 170 makes absolutely no sense, and it clogs up the entire division, which isn’t fair to the rest of the crew.”

So far no word yet as to when McGregor’s next fight will be. However reports have surfaced that the UFC is looking to book a lightweight title fight between McGregor and Eddie Alvarez for their inaugural show at the Madison Square Garden at UFC 205.
