Conor McGregor, Khabib Nurmagomedov both facing fines, suspensions after UFC 229 brawl

UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor are both facing disciplinary action from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) following their post-fight brawl at Saturday’s UFC 229 card, per MMA Fighting.

This brawl began shortly after Khabib Nurmagomedov defeated Conor McGregor by fourth-round submission. The Russian champion then vaulted out of the cage and attacked McGregor’s training partner Dillon Danis, sparking absolute chaos between the two teams.

Initially, it seemed as though only Khabib Nurmagomedov was in hot water for this wild incident. His $2 million fight purse has been held by the commission ever since, and the expectation has been that there are fines and suspensions coming his way.

Having reviewed the wealth of footage captured of this brawl, however, the NSAC has decided that Conor McGregor is not blameless either.

According to MMA Fighting’s report, the commission will also punish McGregor for his role in the bedlam. Though he has been given his $3 million fight purse, it’s likely that he, like Nurmagomedov, can expect fines and suspensions down the road.

According to Lance Pugmire of the LA Times, the NSAC has already suspended both fighters for 10 days as a tentative measure while it begins thoroughly examining the case.

“The Nevada Athletic Commission will deliver 10-day suspensions to Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor in short order as it begins in earnest its review of Khabib’s post-fight leap into the crowd Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena,” Pugmire Tweeted.

While the severity of Nurmagomedov and McGregor’s seemingly inevitable suspensions is still not known, the stakes certainly seem higher for the former. UFC President Dana White implied post-fight that, should Nurmagomedov receive a long suspension, the UFC might be moved to strip him of his lightweight title.

What kind of punishments do you think are appropriate for Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov after UFC 229?
