Conor McGregor: ‘I would like to box Floyd Mayweather again’

Floyd Mayweather, Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor is just six days away from the biggest fight in MMA history. McGregor will be taking on current UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, where McGregor is looking to regain his belt.

Although it may be McGregor’s toughest challenge yet, he is already looking towards his future.

“I would like to box him again,” McGregor said of another matchup with Floyd Mayweather on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show.

McGregor had a massive payday when he took on Mayweather in the summer of 2017. Although the Irishman never had a professional boxing match on his resume, he held his own against the legend, but ultimately lost in the 10th round by TKO.

It was a fine performance by McGregor, but now he is back in the UFC, where many are glad to see him. The 30-year-old, like mentioned, is taking on Nurmagomedov, but with a win, many would like to see him fight former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St. Pierre.

Speaking to Helwani, McGregor said he is open to a fight with the UFC legend, but he knows that will not be his next fight in the UFC after Nurmagomedov.

“I don’t think next though,” he said, agreeing to the fact that St.Pierre and himself don’t have any personal problems. Or the fact that the legend doesn’t currently have a belt.

McGregor has been adamant that he would like to fight for a third belt, whether that be for Tyron Woodley’s 170-pound belt, or perhaps for the rumoured 165-pound division belt. No matter who he fights next, it has to be something McGregor cares about.

“I’m gonna do fights that interest me or that have meaning,” the former double-champ added.

A fight that does interest McGregor is the trilogy fight between Nate Diaz and himself. Diaz beat McGregor by submission in the first bout, before McGregor insisted they run it back at 170-pounds, where he overcame the odds and defeated Diaz by decision.

Where the third and potentially final bout will be, no one truly knows. It could be at 155, 165 or 170 again. All that McGregor knows is the trilogy fight will happen.

“I will always give that man his rematch,” he added. “He gave me a rematch, I give him a rematch, that’s the way it is. When it will happen, I don’t know. … We will complete that trilogy, no doubt about it.”

Who would you like to see McGregor face following his fight against Nurmagomedov? Diaz, GSP, Woodley? Sound off in the comments, PENN Nation.
