Conor McGregor expected to be stripped of title, Pettis vs. Holloway to fight for interim belt

ufc featherweight

After period of much speculation, it has now been confirmed that UFC 206 will be headlined by an interim featherweight title fight between former UFC lightweight champion Anthony Pettis and top ranked featherweight Max Holloway.

Ariel Helwani broke the story Friday evening, revealing that in the wake of Daniel Cormier withdrawing from his UFC 206 light heavyweight title scrap with Anthony Johnson, the UFC brass could be looking to make the co-main event fight between Pettis and Holloway for the interim featherweight belt.

Max Holloway

Now, MMAFighting is officially reporting that Holloway vs. Pettis is now an interim featherweight title fight, likely indicating that the UFC will proceed with promoting interim featherweight champion Jose Aldo to the undisputed featherweight champion, and subsequently stripping Conor McGregor of the featherweight championship in the wake of his UFC 205 win over Eddie Alvarez, where he claimed the lightweight championship.

Pettis will be going into the interim featherweight title fight on a win, after successfully snapping a 3-fight lightweight skid when he made his successful featherweight debut earlier this year when he submitted Charles Oliveira.

Holloway on the other hand will be riding a spectacular 9-fight win streak into the bout that has seen him go undefeated for the past two years, most recently defeating Ricardo Lamas via unanimous decision at UFC 199.

Stay tuned for updates on the situation as they become available.
