In a shocking move, Charles Oliveira has been suspended by the New York State Athletic Commission for his celebration following his first round submission win over Will Brooks. After winning the fight, Oliveira celebrated as many fighters do, by jumping the cage. That didn’t sit too well with the New York State Athletic Commission, who handed Oliveira a 60-day suspension for the action. That of course is on top of the mandatory minimum 7-day medical suspension Oliveira received following his lightweight debut.

The win over Brooks was certainly a much needed one for Oliveira, who found himself going into 2017 on a 2-fight skid that saw him drop a ‘UFC Fight Night: Vancouver’ submission loss to Anthony Pettis nine months ago, before then dropping a submission loss to Ricardo Lamas at the TUF Latin America 3 Finale back in November of 2016. With his 2-fight losing streak now snapped, Oliveira has found himself at #9 on the UFC’s official featherweight rankings.

NYSAC spokesman Laz Benitez released a brief statement to MMAJunkie regarding Charles Oliveira’s suspension, saying:

“Charles Oliveira was administratively suspended 60 days for exiting the fighting area by jumping over the cage after his bout.”

The official reason for which Oliveira was suspended falls under the “exiting the fighting area” category, which coincidentally saw Yoel Romero suspended for 60 days in New York back in November of 2016 after he knocked out former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman with a flying knee in the 3rd round at UFC 205, before then hopping out of the cage to perform his now famous marching routine.

Needless to say, fighters who compete in New York will likely begin to be more careful in regards to their celebrations so as to avoid unnecessary suspensions from the New York State Athletic Commission, who have caught quite a bit of criticism recently for THIS.
