Charles Oliveira misses weight by 9 pounds ahead of ‘UFC Mexico’ fight

Charles Oliveira

While #8 ranked featherweight Charles Oliveira has spent the majority of his UFC career competing at featherweight, ‘Do Bronx’ has been frequently criticized for being inconsistent in regards to his ability to make the featherweight limit of 145 pounds. Friday morning in Mexico City, Oliveira missed weight for his ‘TUF Latin America 3 Finale’ fight with Ricardo Lamas by 9 pounds.

The miss made it 5 total for Oliveira over the course of his UFC career, with it being the 4th time he has missed weight, and still could potentially end up competing the following evening.

While Oliveira is one of the best submission specialists in the UFC, winning 7 ‘Submission of the Night’ awards over the course of his 9 UFC fights, in addition to earning three ‘Fight of the Night’ awards, his inability to consistently make weight, and defeat top-ranked opponents have kept him from cracking into the featherweight division’s top 5.

While a freak injury in the form of a torn esophagus ended his ‘UFC Fight Night: Saskatoon’ scrap with Max Holloway, snapping his 4-fight win streak, Oliveira bounced back by defeating Myles Jury via 1st round submission in December of 2015. Following the win over Jury, where Oliveira also missed weight, he dropped a 3rd round submission to Anthony Pettis earlier this year in Pettis’ featherweight debut earlier this year.
